Happiness is one of the most sought-after goals in life, yet for many, it seems difficult to find. Does the question, how to live a happy life sound possible?
Contrary to what most people think, true happiness isn’t about getting all the best cars, houses and other material things, it’s way more deeper than that.
Human wants are insatiable and getting all you need now wouldn’t give you true happiness. Am I wrong? Let’s find out.
A conversation between a rich businessman and a fisherman(having just one boat) who was lying peacefully on his boat after some fishing went as follows:
Business Man: Why aren’t you fishing anymore, it’s just too early to rest?
Fisher Man: I have caught enough fishes for the day.
Business Man: Why not catch more?
Fisher Man: And what will I do with the rest?
Business Man: Sell the fishes, buy more and bigger boats, employ more workers, buy a house and even build an empire.
Fisher Man: And what will I do after getting all these?
Business Man: You will enjoy life and be happy.
Then the fisher man asked the business man a very frank question.
Fisher Man: And what do you think I am doing right now?
It’s those little things that really matter and can equally make you live a happy life. A happy life is contagious and would make others around you to feel the vibe.
Life is really short and it makes a lot of people see and use the opportunities life throws at them differently.
Some would want to enjoy life to the very fullest because there’s not much time while some would just allow it to evaporate away because it’s too short. A third group is what I really can’t understand.
If you are alive, you could be anything you imagine, have whatever you want, go places and meet other people like you. All it takes is a willing heart and a consistent hand.

Love What You Do & Do What You Love If It’s Good
The same way a doctor would not feel comfortable as a footballer, you can’t be happy when you are seriously doing what you don’t love. There’s joy in doing what you love and doing it well.
If your passion is writing articles online, playing football, singing, etc, make sure you do it and become better. Once you do what you love, you will be living a happy life.
But make sure what you love doing is good.
Smiling is something so powerful and extraordinary. No matter your state of mind, smiling can make you feel better.
Practice smiling more and see how it affects you internally, as well as those around you. Smiling is easier than frowning and will always make you happier.
Living isn’t all about breathing in Oxygen and sending out CO2, it’s far more than that. Once you don’t have anything that makes others value you, it could make you feel inferior.
Find out your hidden potentials, do something unique and solve problems, it would make you feel special and then give you happiness.
Share With Others
The dead sea is lonely and stagnant because it doesn’t give out or share like other water bodies. A life lived without sharing can become lonely. There’s joy in sharing and it makes you feel better.
Look around you, someone needs what you have in excess or what you may not need. Share and feel the happiness giving brings.
Ask for Forgiveness, Forgive & Forget
Like my best friend always says, holding a grudge is like holding a hot coal in your hand to throw at the offender. It will certainly harm you more than the person you’re holding it against.
Let go of every unforgiveness and always ask for forgiveness when you offend someone. A mind with grudges or guilt will not be completely happy. Throw off those waste and look at what is ahead of you, probably a happier life.
Stay Away From Trouble
Those who make or go close to trouble will always have a lot of problems which will make them have an unhappy life. Trouble isn’t good to create but if it comes your way, please bypass it to stay happy always.
Procrastination is a big problem that affects a lot of people. Every day has its own issues and should be fixed as soon as possible. Pushing your tasks to a later period will only compile it and then give you more work to do and less time to rest.
As soon as you have the opportunity to do something important, do it and save yourself the stress of doing too many things at a time.
I always feel very happy and fulfilled when I am able to give a helping hand and see it going well. If you can, always help others and keep doing it. The joy you will get is always fresh and priceless.
A thankful heart will always receive a double portion. Think about how far you have gone and thank God for it. Ingrates always feel uneasy and don’t move forward.
Be grateful to people no matter how small their services are and you will live a happier live continuously
If you can’t go to a gym, you can do simple exercises like work out, jumping and running to keep your entire system healthy. Drinking a lot of water also helps to keep your body healthy/hydrated.
When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine.
A sick person can’t be happier than a healthy person. Don’t underestimate daily exercises.
Eat Healthy Food
Good food is very necessary for living. When you eat right, you feel better both physically and mentally. Once you eat in the wrong way, it will affect your system and also affect your emotions.
Remember, a hungry man is an angry man.
Stay Away From Negativity
Negative thoughts can cause high BP as well as other health issues. Negative people will always make your life uneasy and full of stress.
Understand what and who makes you feel bad, stay away from it completely if you want to live happier.
Stay Close To Your Loved Ones
The sight of your loved ones is always refreshing. I always visit my mum and siblings at least once in a week. It doesn’t make me feel bored when am with them and everything seems to be so easy with my loved ones.
Don’t Take Decisions Out Of Pressure
Live a responsible life backed up by genuine reasons. If you keep doing things out of pressure, you will always be unhappy. Don’t be pressured into taking decisions that will change your life for a while.
Most people who are pressured into marriage always live in disunity and lack of love. Take responsibility of your life and actions.
Be Contented With What You Have
You can get whatever you want in life but you can’t get everything at once or with ease. Just like a baby can’t immediately become an adult, you should allow time to do its job. What you have right now is what a lot of people are looking for, be contented with your presence and strive to grow at a consistent pace.
We cannot avoid stressful situations, but we can find ways to relieve ourselves of stress. Have some time to meditate, sleep properly, and don’t over work yourself without proper rest.
Stress is unavoidable but you can still manage it.

Learn To Say No/Yes
A lot of people find it difficult to say no when they really should have said it. It’s not always a good idea to say yes even if the situation would affect you negatively. Saying yes at all times will make you less happier and full of regrets.
Say No! when it’s necessary and Yes! when its suitable. Don’t let people know you for who you aren’t.
Mistakes Are Bound To Happen
Everyone makes mistakes once in a while. Some could be intentional and others unintentional. Once you have made mistakes, no matter the gravity of it’s effect, learn to let go of it completely.
Living your present thinking about your past errors will only bring regrets which isn’t an attitude of a happy life. Learn from your mistakes and move on positively.
Don’t Trust/Totally Depend On People
Humans are always imperfect. Putting all of your trust or depending on someone to always make you happy and never disappointing you is a dangerous leap.
A lot of relationships are broken because of too much trust. If you trust, it’s okay but don’t always expect the other party to be a saint.
Mistakes are bond to happen and when it does, forgive and forget. To live a happy life, trust less.
Return SMS/Phone Calls
Stop making people feel bad by ignoring their calls or text messages, it will also make you unhappy.
Find time to return calls or let them know you are busy and would call back in a later time. And please, do call back.
Lie is generally bad but some people have mastered the art and feel good about it. The more you lie and people get to find out the truth later, the less trust you get and the more unhappy you will become.
Don’t lie if possible and confess to the offended so as to gain the trust and fix the relationship.
Be Sincere Always
Forget about what everybody does these days. Never answer “I’m fine” when someone asks you how you are doing. Be honest.
You’re either doing great, terrible or okay. You will always feel bad after pretending to be find and end up saying “Why didn’t I tell her/him I am not feeling fine”
Worrying steals your happiness and makes you even bored at all times. Stop worrying so much. Worrying doesn’t change anything, action does. You could meditate, talk to a friend and pray about your worries before taking actions.
Most of the terrible things that we think are going to happen, never do. Why worry?
Asking a question saved me too many times when I didn’t know my way out or into a new place. Imagine if I felt so comfortable not to ask, I would have ended up wasting hours and then never feel great.
In class, home, holidays or whatever situation you find yourself, ask questions if it is necessary.
Listen To Other People
It makes no sense interrupting others just because you feel like you should be the only one talking. In every conversation, once you give the other party a chance to speak without distracting them, it makes them feel good and would probably give you the same feeling.
Mostly on phone calls, always listen till the end before you jump in to speak. Simple!
Talk To Children
I love some kids in my neighborhood because of how cheerful they always look. I haven’t figured out the reason though. But, as much as possible, get close to children and have some leisure fun with them.
Ask them about school, teach them something new and help them out with little stuff.
It always makes me feel better talking to these innocent little ones. The feeling you get when a kid runs to embrace you each time they see you, that’s it. Don’t ignore the little children around you.
Never Compare Yourself With Others
I do it a lot, but that was then. The sad truth is, most times when we compare ourselves to others, we usually do it because we aren’t feeling safe or we are feeling inferior.
If you want to live a perfect life, never compare yourself to others for any reason.
When you feel like you don’t match up to someone in class, work, outfit or whatever, remember they were once in the ground state and everyone is not gonna progress at the same pace with others.
If you can’t help it, only compare yourself in a positive way.
Being happy is a choice and being happier at all times is possible. These are the most basic steps to living a happy life.
