Reading and sleeping or sleeping when trying to read is a very common problem faced by students and non-students. Well, as one who has battled with such issues (how to read without sleeping) for a long time and succeeded, I will also walk you through.
I remember a senior friend saying something very funny. He said
“If you want an African man to sleep, just give him a book to read.”
I sincerely know Africans are great people and are doing well educationally. But, I still wonder why he keeps repeating that.
The funny thing is that it affects a lot of students/people and it’s really drawing attention.
If you are in school and you visit the library or any place where people come to read, you will surely find some sleeping comfortably and even snoring.
So, is it really possible to read without sleeping? The answer is a Yes! Although it takes a little time to get it right provided you are willing to make that change.
If you find yourself dizzy and finally sleeping off after trying to read that important book, then you should read on. Below you will find effective tips to help you read and never sleep again.
How To Read Without Sleeping
Below are the most effective ways to stop reading and sleeping. Take your time to read them(don’t sleep), practice them and share the tips with your friends.
Read under a bright light/Lamp
It’s believed that poor reading light causes our vision loss with time. Contrary to popular belief, the answer is no.
Reading in low light does not ruin your eyesight but you should avoid it. Most eyes worsen simply as an effect of aging.
However, while doctors agree that there is no evidence of poor reading light being detrimental to vision, good reading light can reduce uncomfortable short-term effects such as headaches or eye strain as well as make reading more enjoyable.
Whenever you are reading, let the light be bright enough to avoid straining your eyes. Once you overstress your eyes just to see what’s in the book, you will end up feeling dizzy and subsequently find yourself waking up the next morning because you slept off.
Also, try to focus more on the light(if possible) to the book because that where your attention should be.
The point is, don’t use dim or extremely low lights when reading. Go get something really bright.
Have the passion for what you do
Once you start trying to read what doesn’t really interest you or catch your fancy, your brain can’t be fooled. Reading without passion is like listening to a lullaby, you are just going to sleep soon like you took a sleeping pill.
The point is, if what you are reading isn’t interesting in any way or you haven’t developed a natural passion for it, go and take care of the important thing first.
You could hear a science student saying
I hate maths and physics but prefer biology.
Once he/she tries to read or study maths and physics, sleep creeps in like a millipede.
Distract yourself a little bit
It’s okay to read for eternity if it’s your thing, but if you are among the sleep and read group, you could gradually change that.
When you are reading and you find out your eyes aren’t cooperating anymore, kindly give yourself a little break. Stand up and straighten those hands and legs, walk some steps and sit back. After that long period of reading, your body needs a little physical refreshment.
Drink and keep a bottle of water around you
Forget what inexperienced people would tell you, one essential key to a successful reading without sleeping is simply taking of water once in a while during study.
You don’t need to know why a drink helps, but it’s popularly known that information flows more freely between brain cells when they are well hydrated. Once you keep your body hydrated as you study, you won’t feel dizzy so fast.
Drinking water also calm your nerves and makes you feel relaxed.
I naturally feel thirsty when ever I am reading and that’s why I always keep a bottle of water(not beer or any other thing) close by.
Use your Phone to search for any unclear stuff
We have naturally been more attracted to our smartphones than most other stuffs. When reading and something seems so unclear, use your phone and do a quick search.
Google and other search engines will be of great help in any field you would like to research on.
Here’s the trick
Once you feel dizzy because you are so confused, picking up your phone can immediately send the sleep away. But don’t just pick up your phone to trick your body, use it for something beneficial to the moment.
Read & Write (Engagement)
Even if you are reading a novel, you can always engage your fingers. While reading, as you come across stuff that are very important, write them down or make a mark on it.
While it will help you kick off the dizziness, it will also help you memorize some important things.
Read with those who have mastered the art
Once you read in groups with serious people who have mastered the art, you will be encouraged to do the same. Most times when I and some friends go out to read, it’s always interesting.
As soon as the garment of sleep starts covering you and you see your colleagues still awake and strong reading, you will be forced to stay awake.
It has always worked and helped a lot of us to cut out that bad habit of sleeping when we try to read.
Pray, most sleep isn’t just normal
Sounds weird right? Well, it’s true. This tip might not sound cool to every reader.
Have you ever asked yourself these questions?
- Why do I sleep when reading but could stay awake for 24 hours on Facebook or when using my smartphone.
- Why do you feel dizzy while reading but you can watch 3 seasonal movies simultaneously without feeling a pinch of sleep?
- Why can you feel extremely dizzy when reading a religious book like the Bible but can read a novel actively.
You should always pray to God to help you do what’s right and give you the strength to fight your weakness(including sleeping and reading). The Bible in Matthew 13:25-30 (NKJV) says:
“But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.”
Most mysteries in life happen when you sleep. If someone can uncontrollably sleep so well a day to his/her final exams, then, you have to pray before reading.
Reading one stuff too many times could become boring & lead to sleep
It’s self-explanatory. You can revise/do a revision on whatever you want, but overdoing it could make it become boring and then cause sleep while you are trying to read.
Based on personal preferences, you can find out what works/doesn’t work for you.
Don’t always read when you are hungry
Your body needs nutrients to work properly especially when it involves the brain. Starving yourself because you want to get good grades could make you lose on both sides.
Eat good/balanced diet before studying. Not too heavy or too light, but something that’s very okay. Once your system is stable, it will function well and you would be reading comfortably without yawning every second.
Don’t overwork yourself before studying
While this might not be a problem for some students, it’s always a good idea to read with strength in your body. It’s not right to be working repeatedly without proper rest. You won’t finish everything as expected.
Take enough rest before you go to your study room or library and you won’t sleep off during the real deal.
Your Bed is a Trap, use a reading Table
No matter how comfortable you feel laying on your bed to read, it’s not the best approach. Once you are so relaxed on that bed reading, you will soon find yourself waking up the next day with the book on the floor.
The best thing is to read while sitting down like in class. The chair and table should be very comfortable so you won’t strain your whole body.
It’s only when you are reading something not so important that you will use the comfort of your bed as a reading table.
Sleeping before reading
Having a nice siesta mostly work for a lot of people. Once you sleep well and relax your body, you should be able to read without feeling sleepy.
Rest properly before study time.
Use an Alarm
If you just can’t help sleeping when you try to read, an alarm can step in.
Set an alarm when you start reading to periodically alert you or probably wake you up when you fall asleep. Once you keep repeating it ritually, your body system will get used to it and soon you won’t need an alarm anymore.
Take your Bath & read in a ventilated area
How would you feel studying with your whole body feeling like you are a spark plug? It doesn’t and wouldn’t make sense.
Take your time to wash off all those dirt on your body and feel refreshed before going to study. Studying is an awesome act and it’s worth doing properly.
Once you are ready to read, make sure the environment is well ventilated so you don’t feel uneasy while studying. It will definitely lead to instant sleep.
Read comfortably either at Night/Day or Both
If you are naturally so apt in reading during the day but will always fall asleep at night, please stick to what works for you. There’s no need trying to buy yourself some alien nature.
If you keep forcing yourself to read at night and you just succeed in reading for 1 minute and sleep for 10 hours, it isn’t working.
The simple tip is this, read when it’s comfortable. You can make out a lot from your strength.
Coffee/Green tea before studying also works
Coffee is an enjoyable drink that helps kick-start the morning and provide a boost of energy during the day. This is because the caffeine in coffee is a mild stimulant that can in many ways help increase the capacity to study.
It can positively affect overall mood, enhance alertness and performance while eventually, thereby aiding learning abilities. Taking a cup of coffee does scare away some sleep and leave you to concentrate on the book.
Don’t over drink it, just very little or you might have some health issues.
A mnemonic is any learning technique that aids information retention or retrieval (remembering) in the human memory. Using mnemonics can push-off sleep when you are reading.
After reading a while, try to figure out what you have learned, teach someone or pretend to talk to a virtual class, test your skill etc. All these simple gestures will help you stay active while reading.
Don’t Fake reading
What do you expect when you are reading just to deceive, pretend or play a game. There’s no good intent and your brain will just go to rest because you aren’t serious.
When you know you don’t feel like reading, don’t fake it unless reading is a sleeping pill for you. Don’t read because dad is watching you, you will end up sleeping as soon as daddy leaves.
Read! Read! Read!
Regular exercise of an activity or skill is the way to become proficient in it. When sleep has stolen your reading time, please keep on reading until your system feels natural to it.
Once you keep trying to solve your reading and sleeping issue by carefully making sacrifices for your study, it’s just a matter of time, you won’t have any more issues.
So keep reading as much as you can, your body will get used to it.
Let me add something that could be a bonus tip. If you really can’t read without sleeping in between your study and waking up again with the struggle, then just do this simple trick.
You know what, just sleep. Yes, sleep.
If your body keeps turning your eyes off and you struggle to open it and all that, you will end up losing the war against yourself.
Sleep and allow yourself to go through it. I bet you, once you wake up normally, you can’t sleep again while reading. Now you can focus without falling and rising.
Don’t do this if your usual sleep is 24 hours unless you want to deceive yourself into something weird.
And if you just can’t still figure it out(like most people who even sleep in an examination hall), then you will know some sleep ain’t just normal.
These tips on how to read without sleeping have worked for a lot of people and I hope it will do the same for you. Remember, readers are leaders and you can’t do without studying.
Don’t let sleep still away from your brain power and potentials.
If you have a special trick or something that works for you, please we would love your contribution.
